What is Dehydrocholic Acid?
Dehydrocholic Acid acts as a direct choleretic agent by enhancing the secretion of bile from the liver. It promotes the production of water and electrolytes in bile, dilating the bile ducts and facilitating the flow of bile into the duodenum. This function is crucial for maintaining the normal physiological process of fat digestion and absorption. By increasing bile output, it helps solubilize cholesterol and prevent the formation of gallstones, making it useful in the prophylactic management of cholesterol gallstone disease.Due to its ability to increase bile flow, Dehydrocholic Acid helps flush out small biliary calculi, mucus, or inflammatory exudates from the biliary tract. This "mechanical flushing" effect can alleviate obstruction in the bile ducts, reducing the risk of secondary infections (such as cholangitis) and relieving symptoms like jaundice or abdominal discomfort associated with biliary stasis. It is often used as an adjunct therapy in chronic cholecystitis or after biliary surgery to promote ductal clearance.
