What is Deoxycholic acid (DCA)?
Deoxycholic acid (DCA) is a secondary bile acid naturally produced in the human body through the bacterial metabolism of primary bile acids in the intestine. Chemically, it is classified as a steroid derivative with the molecular formula C24H40O4 and a molecular weight of 392.58 g/mol. It appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder with a characteristic bitter taste and is sparingly soluble in water but readily dissolves in alcohols, alkaline solutions, and organic solvents like l and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Deoxycholic acid has a melting point range of 172-176°C and exhibits optical activity, with a specific rotation of +48° to +52° in . Structurally, it contains hydroxyl groups at the 3α and 12α positions, which contribute to its amphiphilic properties, enabling it to emulsify fats and facilitate lipid digestion. The compound is stable under normal storage conditions but may degrade upon prolonged exposure to light, moisture, or extreme pH levels. Due to its role in lipid metabolism, DCA is often derived from animal bile or synthesized for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications. Its purity is typically assessed via HPLC, with commercial grades required to contain ≥98% active ingredient and limited impurities such as cholic acid and lithocholic acid.
