2,3,3'',4,4'',5,5''-Heptabromobiphenyl, is a polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), which can be used as fire-retardant chemicals.

Electronic appliances: ABS, PC plastic casing, circuit board, wire and cable insulation layer;
Rubber and plastic materials: polyurethane foam, engineering plastics, rubber products;
Textile and building materials: synthetic fabrics, building insulation plastics, coating resins

Electronic and electrical RoHS testing: According to GB/T 29613 and GB/T 39560, GC-MS quantitative detection of PBBs residues in products;
Environmental monitoring: analysis of polybrominated biphenyls pollution in soil, water bodies, sediments, and atmosphere;
Food testing: screening for residual brominated flame retardants in animal and vegetable oils, fresh food;

Coupling reaction: Under inert nitrogen protection, heated and refluxed at 80-90 ℃, palladium catalyzed C-C coupling occurs to generate the skeleton 1,2,3,4-tetrabromo-5- (3,4,5-triphromophenyl) benzene (crude heptabromobiphenyl);
Post treatment: cooling, washing with water to remove inorganic salts, and extracting the organic phase with dichloromethane;
Purification: Concentrate the solvent and recrystallize 2-3 times with methanol/ethanol;
Refinement: Vacuum sublimation to obtain high-purity solid standard samples with a purity of over 98%.

Solvent: dichloromethane/carbon tetrachloride, Lewis acid catalysts (FeBr ∝, AlBr ∝);
Low temperature batch wise addition of liquid bromine, controlling the molar ratio of the feed for multi-step substitution of benzene ring bromine;
Disadvantages: The bromination site is non selective, generating mixed isomers of penta, hexa, hepta, and octabromobiphenyl, requiring multiple chromatographic separations with extremely low yields. It is only used for preparing mixed standard solutions and does not prepare BB-189 separately.
