1,2-Dichloroethane is a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent with high solubility, primarily used in industrial coatings, resin processing, and chemical extraction applications. It exhibits excellent dissolving properties for oils, fats, rubber, PVC resins, asphalt, and various organic resins. It is commonly used as a coating solvent to dilute alkyd, epoxy, and chlorinated rubber coatings, improving film leveling and reducing system viscosity, and is suitable for the production of metal anti-corrosion paints and floor coatings. In the field of chemical extraction, it is used to separate impurities from oils and organic intermediates, efficiently purifying raw materials for pharmaceutical and dye synthesis; in the rubber industry, it serves as a cleaning solvent for raw rubber, removing surface release agents and oil contamination. It can also function as a basic raw material for organic synthesis, being cracked to produce vinyl chloride monomer, a key intermediate in the PVC supply chain. It is used in small quantities for degreasing and cleaning precision metal components; after cleaning, it evaporates at a moderate rate without leaving residues and does not corrode carbon steel or stainless steel substrates. Due to its broad solubility range and strong chemical stability, it is widely used as a substitute for more toxic halogenated solvents; however, it must not be used in applications involving contact with food or personal care products. It is primarily used in closed-loop industrial settings, paired with ventilation and recovery equipment to minimize evaporation losses.
