    1. Physical Properties
    It appears as colorless crystals or a white powder. It is slightly soluble in water, practically insoluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, and soluble only in dilute acids. Its aqueous solution has a pH of approximately 10–11 and is weakly alkaline; it does not deliquesce in air.
    2. Chemical Properties
    (1) Thermal Stability: Its thermal stability is lower than that of other alkali metal carbonates in the same group. It decomposes when heated above 883°C, producing lithium oxide and carbon dioxide. It does not deliquesce at all in dry air at room temperature and is chemically stable.
    (2) Characteristic Reactions: When carbon dioxide is passed through an aqueous suspension of lithium carbonate, it converts to soluble lithium bicarbonate; boiling this solution causes lithium carbonate to precipitate again. This property is commonly utilized in industry for purification and impurity removal.
    (3) Acid-Base Reactions: It reacts with strong acids such as dilute hydrochloric acid and dilute sulfuric acid, dissolving completely to form the corresponding lithium salt while releasing carbon dioxide gas.
    (4) Coordination Properties: It can form double salts with certain metal ions; during industrial purification, impurities can be separated by controlling the pH value.
    3. Main Applications
    Lithium carbonate is classified by purity grade into medical-grade, industrial-grade, and battery-grade; these grades are strictly separate and must not be interchanged:
    (1) Medical Field: As a classic mood stabilizer, it is used to treat manic episodes in bipolar disorder, stabilize mood, and prevent the recurrence of mania and depression. It can also be used as an adjunctive treatment for treatment-resistant depression and schizoaffective disorder. It is a prescription drug; clinical use requires regular monitoring of blood lithium levels to avoid lithium toxicity.
    (2) Industrial Applications: Battery-grade lithium carbonate is a core raw material for the production of lithium-ion battery cathode materials and is widely used in power batteries for new energy vehicles and energy storage batteries. It is also used in the manufacture of specialty glass and ceramic glazes to improve product hardness and heat resistance, as well as an additive in aluminum smelting electrolytic baths and a catalyst for synthetic rubber. It finds applications in the semiconductor and defense industries, among others.
