1. Physical Properties
At room temperature, it is a colorless, needle-like crystal or a white solid with no noticeable volatile odor. It is miscible in any proportion with organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and chloroform, and slightly soluble in cold alkane solvents. It has no established flash point data and is classified as a Class C flammable chemical.
2. Chemical Properties
(1) Reactivity: It can undergo diazotization to form diazonium salts, which can be further used to prepare azo dyes or substituted derivatives.
(2) Stability: It is chemically stable at room temperature and standard pressure and does not undergo polymerization. It must not be mixed with strong oxidizing agents, strong acids, or acyl chlorides, as contact with these substances can lead to violent reactions.
(3) Thermal Decomposition Properties: Decomposes when heated above 300°C, releasing toxic and corrosive fumes such as hydrogen chloride and nitrogen oxides; combustion products include carbon monoxide and toxic dioxin byproducts.
3. Major Applications
(1) Pharmaceutical synthesis: It serves as the core starting material for the quinolone antibiotic lomefloxacin and is also used in the synthesis of the diuretic furosemide and the central-acting antihypertensive clonidine; certain high-purity grades can be used in the production of intermediates for antiparasitic drugs.
(2) Pesticide Industry: As a key intermediate in herbicides, it is used to synthesize amide-type herbicides for controlling broadleaf weeds and can also serve as a precursor for the active groups in agricultural fungicides.
(3) Other Specific Applications: It can serve as a dye intermediate for synthesizing chlorinated azo dyes and is also used in the synthesis of specialty rubber additives to enhance the rubber’s resistance to aging.
