L-Ascorbic acid, commonly known as vitamin C, is a naturally occurring essential nutrient with the molecular formula C₆H₈O₆ and a molecular weight of 176.12 g/mol. This white to off-white crystalline powder is a water-soluble vitamin with potent antioxidant properties. Synthetic Process

L-Ascorbic acid is manufactured through the following routes:

• Reichstein process: D-Glucose is reduced to D-sorbitol, which is then oxidized to L-sorbose using microbial fermentation. L-Sorbose is further oxidized and subjected to acid-catalyzed rearrangement to yield L-ascorbic acid.

• Two-step fermentation process: A more recent method using genetically modified bacteria for more efficient production.

• Purification: The crude product is purified by recrystallization from water or aqueous alcohol.
