Water Solubility:Solubility increases with temperature.Insoluble in alcoholSlightly soluble in water.Insoluble in alcohol.Solubility in water, g/100ml at 20°C: 0.76 (poor)
Toxicity:Oral-Mouse LD50: 70 mg/kg
Flammability characteristics:Non-combustible; toxic fluoride and sodium oxide, silicon oxide fumes are emitted from the fire; react with acid to generate toxic hydrogen fluoride
Odor:Odorless
Taste:Tasteless.
PH:SOLN IN COLD WATER IS NEUTRAL
Experimental Properties:Solutions of fluosilicates are sensitive to hydrolysis in alkaline medium. In the presence of acid, fluosilicate solutions release silicon tetrafluoride. The thermal decomposition of fluosilicates takes place with release of gaseous silicon tetrfluoride and formation of the solid fluoride. /Fluosilicates/
Air and Water Reactions:Water soluble.
Reactive Group:Salts, Basic
Reactivity Profile:SODIUM FLUOROSILICATE has weak oxidizing or reducing powers. Redox reactions can however still occur. The majority of compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. If soluble in water, then the solutions are usually neither strongly acidic nor strongly basic. These compounds are not water-reactive. Solutions of sodium fluorosilicate may contain some hydrofluoric acid, which can cause severe chemical burns and is one of the few materials that can etch glass. Unlike other halide ions, fluoride is quite reactive, acting as a weak base and participating in some unique reactions. In particular, fluorides react strongly with compounds containing calcium, magnesium, or silicon ions, which means that solutions containing soluble fluorides are corrosive to both living tissue and glass.
