Solutions of fluosilicates are sensitive to hydrolysis in alkaline medium. In the presence of acid, fluosilicate solutions release silicon tetrafluoride. SODIUM FLUOROSILICATE has weak oxidizing or reducing powers. Redox reactions can however still occur. The majority of compounds in this class are slightly soluble or insoluble in water. If soluble in water, then the solutions are usually neither strongly acidic nor strongly basic. These compounds are not water-reactive. Solutions of sodium fluorosilicate may contain some hydrofluoric acid, which can cause severe chemical burns and is one of the few materials that can etch glass. Unlike other halide ions, fluoride is quite reactive, acting as a weak base and participating in some unique reactions. In particular, fluorides react strongly with compounds containing calcium, magnesium, or silicon ions, which means that solutions containing soluble fluorides are corrosive to both living tissue and glass.

Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Dike fire-control water for later disposal; do not scatter the material. Inhalation of dust may irritate nose and throat. Ingestion causes symptoms similar to fluoride poisoning; compound is highly toxic; initial symptoms include nausea, cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration; in severe cases, convulsions, shock, and cyanosis are followed by death in 2-4 hr. Contact with eyes causes irritation. Contact with skin causes rash, redness, and burning, sometimes followed by ulcer formation. (USCG, 1999)
INHALATION: move to fresh air. INGESTION: seek medical attention; administer gastric lavage with lime water, then give lime water or milk at frequent intervals. EYES: flush with water for at least 15 min. SKIN: flush with water; wash with soap and water. (USCG, 1999)

Sodium fluorosilicate Use and Manufacturing
Calcium superphosphate by-product method produces phosphoric acid by the reaction of phosphate rock powder and sulfuric acid, or the fluorine-containing waste gas that escapes during the extraction of phosphoric acid, and absorbs silicon tetrafluoride into fluorosilicic acid with water. When the concentration of the fluorosilicic acid solution reaches 8% to 10%, it is still clarified to remove impurities. The clarified fluorosilicic acid solution is added with sodium chloride (excess about 25%) to react and generate sodium fluorosilicate. After centrifugal separation, Washing, air drying at a temperature below 300°C, and then pulverization to obtain a finished sodium fluorosilicate product. Its H2SiF6+2NaCl→Na2SiF6+2HCl
