Overview

Tetrahydropalmatine (THP) is an alkaloid extracted from the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Corydalis yanhusuo, belonging to the isoquinoline class of compounds. Between 1928 and 1936, Chinese chemists such as Zhao Chenggu first isolated corydalis A, B (later renamed tetrahydropalmatine), and C from the tubers of Corydalis yanhusuo. THP appears as a white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water but readily soluble in organic solvents. Its chemical structure shares similarities with certain opioid substances, yet it acts through distinct mechanisms.
