Its verified amino acid sequence reads TRP-ALA-GLY-GLY-ASP-ALA-SER-GLY-GLU. Nevertheless, after decades of targeted genomic research, the specific gene responsible for encoding this peptide has not yet been identified . This unresolved molecular origin raises serious questions regarding the authentic existence of this peptide as a native endogenous signalling molecule in living organisms, fueling ongoing academic debate over whether DSIP is a naturally occurring neuropeptide or merely an artefact derived from early isolation procedures.
