1. General Description
Ronidazole is an antiprotozoal and antimicrobial agent used primarily in veterinary practice. It is a 5-nitroimidazole derivative with the chemical name 1-methyl-2-(carbamoyloxymethyl)-5-nitroimidazole. It acts by interfering with protozoal DNA synthesis.

3. Mechanism of Action
Ronidazole exerts its antiprotozoal effect by interfering with the DNA synthesis of protozoal organisms. It is active against a range of anaerobic protozoa and bacteria.

4. Indications / Veterinary Uses
Ronidazole is indicated for the treatment and prevention of multiple protozoal and bacterial infections in animals:

Cats : Treatment of Tritrichomonas foetus infection (oral doses of 30 or 50 mg/kg). In vitro, it kills Tritrichomonas at concentrations >0.1 μg/mL.
Dogs : Treatment of tritrichomonas infections.
Turkeys : Prevention and treatment of histomoniasis (blackhead disease).
Pigeons : Treatment of trichomoniasis.
Poultry / Aviary Birds : Treatment of hexamitosis, giardia, and cochlosoma infections.
Pigs : Prevention and treatment of haemorrhagic enteritis (swine dysentery).
Cattle : Treatment of genital trichomoniasis.

5. Dosage Forms
Ronidazole is available in the following formulations:

Oral capsules : Veterinary prescription capsules typically containing 50 mg or 100 mg of high-purity ronidazole per capsule, manufactured under GMP standards.
Liquid solution : 10% (100 mg/mL) oral liquid solution for veterinary use.

6. Pharmacokinetics
Ronidazole is orally active and well absorbed following oral administration. Metabolic studies in pigs and turkeys show extensive metabolism of ronidazole and rapid elimination of its metabolites. Metabolites are excreted via urine and feces.

7. Safety & Regulatory Status

Ronidazole has shown mutagenic activity in bacterial tests (Ames test).
In animal studies, it increased the incidence of benign tumors (mammary fibroadenoma in rats, lung tumors in mice) and, at high doses (40 mg/kg/day), induced malignant mammary adenocarcinoma in female rats.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) had provisionally established a maximum residue limit (MRL) of 2 μg/kg for residues with an intact nitroimidazole structure in food-producing animals. This provisional MRL expired on January 1, 1994, due to lack of additional data.
The product is intended for veterinary use only and is not for human or therapeutic application in humans.
Research-grade ronidazole is for laboratory/research use only.

Recent studies have explored repurposing ronidazole for the treatment of Clostridioides difficile infection in humans, indicating potential beyond veterinary applications.
