    p-Xylene Liquid

    Physical & Chemical Properties

Appearance & Form: Clear, colorless, highly mobile liquid; characteristic aromatic, sweet odor.

Solubility: Insoluble in water; miscible with alcohol, ether, and most organic solvents.

    Assay (p-Xylene / Xylene Isomers, C8H10): Not less than 99.0% min (or 99.9% for high-purity p-xylene).

Melting / Boiling Point: Melting point ranges from approx. -13oC to 13oC (depending on isomer, e.g., 13.3oC for pure p-xylene); boiling point is approx. 137oC to 138oC.

    Density: Approximately 0.86 to 0.88 g/cm3 (at 20oC).

    Quality & Safety Standards

Non-Aromatic Hydrocarbons & Impurities: Controlled strictly to low limits (e.g., moisture max 0.05%, heavy impurities max 0.1%).

Safety & Handling: Highly flammable liquid and vapor (Class 3 hazard). Harmful by inhalation, in contact with skin, and causes skin irritation. Use explosion-proof equipment, organic vapor respirators, chemical splash goggles, and chemical-resistant gloves in a well-ventilated fume hood or workspace.

    Recommended Applications

Polymers & Synthetic Fibers: Widely utilized as the primary raw material (especially p-xylene) for manufacturing purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), which are key intermediates for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester fibers.

Solvents & Coatings: Employed extensively as an industrial solvent and thinner in paints, varnishes, lacquers, adhesives, and printing inks.

Chemical Synthesis: Used as a chemical feedstock and intermediate in the production of various organic compounds, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural chemicals.

    ECHEMI Editorial Reference
colourless liquidChEBI: A xylene with methyl groups at positions 1 and 4.p-xylene is an aromatic hydrocarbon based on benzene with two methyl substituents with the chemical formula C8H10 or C6H4(CH3)2. It is one of the three isomers of dimethylbenzene known collectively as xylenes. The “p” stands for para, identifying that he two methyl groups in p-xylene occupy the diametrically opposite substituent positions 1 and 4. p-Xylene is a colorless, flammable liquid practically insoluble in water. p-
