Application

Disodium 2‑oxoglutarate dihydrate is also known as sodium α‑ketoglutarate (sodium α‑KG). α‑Ketoglutarate (α‑KG) is an important dibasic acid in the tricarboxylic acid cycle and amino acid metabolism. It can provide nutrition for humans and animals and is widely applied in pharmaceutical, food, fine chemical and other fields.

Preparation

Add 30% (mass percentage) NaOH solution to dimethyl 2,2‑dichloroglutarate and react at 60℃ for 4 hours. The molar ratio of dimethyl 2,2‑dichloroglutarate to NaOH is 1:0.7. The two chlorine atoms on dimethyl 2,2‑dichloroglutarate are substituted by two hydroxyl groups. Two hydroxyl groups attached to the same carbon atom are unstable and dehydrate to form a carbonyl group. The esters at both ends are hydrolyzed into carboxyl groups under alkaline conditions to produce sodium α‑ketoglutarate.
