    Product Overview

    Basic fuchsin is a triarylmethane dye with the molecular formula C₂₀H₁₉N₃·HCl and a molecular weight of 337.85 g/mol. This dark green to dark green crystalline powder is a mixture of rosaniline and pararosaniline, widely used as a biological stain and pH indicator. The compound is one of the most important dyes in histology and microbiology, used for staining bacterial cells (Gram staining), fungal elements, and various tissue sections. Its intense magenta color and ability to bind to acidic cellular components make it valuable for numerous staining applications.

    Synthetic Process

    Basic fuchsin is synthesized through the following routes:

    • Oxidation of mixtures of aniline, toluidine, and p-toluidine: The aniline derivatives are oxidized in the presence of a catalyst to form the triarylmethane dye.

    • Purification: The crude product is purified by recrystallization or precipitation.
