                                                                          • Product Overview

Di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) is an organic peroxide with the molecular formula C₈H₁₈O₂ and molecular weight of 146.23 g/mol. This colorless clear liquid is a widely used free radical initiator in polymerization reactions and organic synthesis. DTBP is valued for its high thermal stability compared to other peroxides, making it suitable for high-temperature radical reactions.

                                                                            Synthetic Process

                                                                            • Synthesis: Di-tert-butyl peroxide is prepared by the reaction of tert-butyl hydroperoxide with tert-butyl alcohol or by the oxidation of isobutene

                                                                            • Purification: The crude product is purified by fractional distillation

                                                                            • Stabilization: Stabilizers may be added to prevent premature decomposition

                                                                            Mechanism of Action

                                                                            • Thermal Decomposition: DTBP undergoes homolytic cleavage of the O-O bond at elevated temperatures to generate two tert-butoxy radicals

                                                                            • Radical Generation: The tert-butoxy radicals can further decompose to methyl radicals and acetone

                                                                            • Polymerization Initiation: Acts as a radical source for initiating polymerization of vinyl monomers

                                                                            • Hydrogen Abstraction: The resulting radicals abstract hydrogen atoms from suitable substrates

                                                                            Research Applications & Market Significance

Di-tert-butylperoxide showed medium sensitivity and a power of 30% TNT. Cumyl hydroperoxide (80% in cumene), dibenzoylperoxide (75% in water), dicumyl peroxide and dilauroyl peroxide did not propagate explosion.

    Air and Water Reactions:

No rapid reaction with air. No rapid reaction with water.

    Reactive Group:

    Peroxides, Organic

    Reactivity Alerts:

    Explosive

    Reactivity Profile:

The explosive instability of the lower dialkyl peroxides (e.g., dimethyl peroxide) and 1,1-bis-peroxides decreases rapidly with increasing chain length and degree of branching, the di-tert-alkyl derivatives being amongst the most stable class of peroxides. Though many 1,1-bis-peroxides have been reported, few have been purified because of the higher explosion hazards compared with the monofunctional peroxides. It is unlikely that this derivative would be particularly unstable compared to other peroxides in its class [Bretherick 2nd ed., p 44 1979].

    Physical Dangers:

The vapour is heavier than air and may travel along the ground; distant ignition possible.
