Product Overview
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a colorless, hygroscopic liquid with a characteristic sulfur odor. It is supplied at ≥99.9% purity and is widely used as a polar aprotic solvent in pharmaceutical, chemical, and electronic applications. DMSO is known for its ability to dissolve both polar and non-polar compounds and for its skin penetration-enhancing properties.

Synthetic Process
DMSO is produced industrially by the oxidation of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) with hydrogen peroxide or nitrogen dioxide. The crude product is purified by distillation to achieve ≥99.9% purity.

Mechanism of Action
As a polar aprotic solvent, DMSO dissolves a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. Its high polarity and aprotic nature make it useful in chemical reactions requiring strong solvation without proton transfer. In pharmaceutical applications, DMSO is used as a penetration enhancer and cryoprotectant.
