Product Overview
Ethylene glycol (MEG) is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid with a sweet taste. It is supplied at ≥99.9% purity and is widely used as an antifreeze agent, polyester raw material, and industrial solvent. Ethylene glycol is a key raw material for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyester fibers.

Synthetic Process
Ethylene glycol is produced industrially by the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide, which is derived from the oxidation of ethylene. The crude product is purified by distillation and ion exchange to achieve high purity grades.

Mechanism of Action
As a diol, ethylene glycol forms hydrogen bonds and dissolves a wide range of polar compounds. Its high boiling point and low freezing point make it effective as an antifreeze agent. In polyester production, it reacts with terephthalic acid to form PET through polycondensation.
