It is a 28-residue polypeptide with structuralsimilarities to secretin and glucagon. It causes vasodilatationand increases cardiac contractibility. VIP stimulates bicarbonatesecretion, relaxes gastrointestinal and othersmooth muscles, stimulates glycogenesis, inhibits gastricacid secretion, and stimulates insulin secretion. Mechanism:

MOTS-c (mitochondrial ORF of the twelve S rRNA-c) is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded by the mitochondrial genome (not nuclear DNA). It is a mitochondrial-derived peptide that regulates metabolic homeostasis by activating the AMPK/PGC-1\u03b1 pathway, improving insulin sensitivity, and enhancing exercise capacity. MOTS-c crosses the blood-brain barrier and has been shown to reduce body weight and improve glucose tolerance in preclinical models.

Activity note:

MOTS-c does not act via a traditional receptor. It functions as a metabolic regulator, activating AMPK. Functional effects are observed at micromolar concentrations in cell-based assays.
