Product Overview
Salicylic acid is a white crystalline powder supplied at 99-100.5% purity. It is widely used as a pharmaceutical intermediate (for aspirin synthesis), a preservative, and in dermatological and cosmetic applications. It is sparingly soluble in water but soluble in organic solvents .

Synthetic Process
Salicylic acid is produced industrially by the Kolbe-Schmitt reaction, in which sodium phenoxide is treated with carbon dioxide under pressure, followed by acidification.

Mechanism of Action
As a β-hydroxy acid, it acts as a keratolytic agent and has antimicrobial properties. In pharmaceutical synthesis, it serves as a precursor for acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).
