DescriptionPinene is the main component of turpentine and numerous plant essential oils. Its molecule contains double bonds, bridge rings and chiral carbon atoms, making it a type of compound with a special structure and promising application prospects. In recent years, research on the pharmacological activities of α-pinene and β-pinene has attracted much attention. This not only helps to improve the research on the biological activities of α-pinene and β-pinene, but also promotes the development of derivative compounds with drug activity of α-pinene and β-pinene.The content of α-pinene in pine oil is the highest in the synthesis process. In pine oil products from various regions, although the content varies, it is at least 75% or even more than 90%. It can be directly separated from pine oil by distillation, and by utilizing the different properties of α-pinene, it can be synthesized into a series of fine chemical raw materials or products.Chemical properties: The main component of pine oil. In the resinous oil of Pinus massoniana, its content accounts for 86%. It is a colorless transparent liquid with a pine terpene characteristic odor. It is insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, acetic acid and other organic solvents, and easily soluble in rosin.ECHEMI Editorial Referenceα-Pinene is the most widespread pinene isomer. (+)-α-Pinene, (1R,5R)-2,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]hept-2-ene, occurs, for example, in oil from Pinus palustris Mill., at a concentration up to 65%; oil from Pinus pinaster Soland and American oil from Pinus caribaea contain 70% and 70–80%, respectively, of the laevorotatory isomer, (?)-α-Pinene, (1S,5S)-2,6,6-trimethylbicyclo[3.3.1]hept-2-ene.
