DescriptionProduct DescriptionMenthol, also known as menthol alcohol, is a type of terpene-based organic compound with the chemical formula C10H20O. Menthol is extracted from the leaves and stems of mint and is the main component of mint and peppermint essential oils. It is usually colorless needle-like or prism-shaped crystals or white crystalline powder, with a distinctive mint aroma, and has a slightly burning initial taste followed by a refreshing sensation. It is highly soluble in ethanol, chloroform, ether, liquid paraffin, or volatile oils, and is almost insoluble in water.Menthol generally has two isomers (D-type and L-type). The natural menthol is mainly the left-handed isomer (L-menthol), and the menthol here usually refers to the racemic menthol (DL-menthol). Menthol can be used as an aroma agent in toothpaste, perfumes, beverages, and candies. In medicine, it is used as an stimulant, acting on the skin or mucous membranes, with a cooling and antipruritic effect; internally, it can be used as a deworming drug, used for headaches and nasal, pharyngeal, and laryngeal inflammations, and its esters can also be used as fragrances and drugs.
