0.087 mol of 3-chloro-5-trifluoromethyl-2-hydroxypyridine (17.1 g) was added to 150 ml of phosphorus oxybromide and the reaction temperature was raised to 150 ° C and the reaction time was 6 hours.The reaction was cooled to ambient temperature and slowly added cautiously to ice-water, stirred vigorously at -200 rpm for 1 hour at -5 to 0 ° C, and the resulting mixture was extracted three times with dichloromethane.The extracted organic phases were combined, dried, filtered and dried to give the crude product.The crude product was chromatographed on a silica gel column using dichloromethane-methanol as eluent (100: 1 to 20: 1 by volume) to give 13.1 g of 2-bromo-3-chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine (0.05 mol) in 58percent yield.
