Description
Stibogluconate sodium is a potent inhibitor of protein tyrosine phosphatase. Stibogluconate sodium inhibits 99% of SHP-1, SHP-2 and PTP1B activity at 10, 100, 100 μg/mL, respectively.
Antimony complex where the metal may exist in either the pentavalent or trivalent states. The pentavalent gluconate is used in leishmaniasis. The trivalent gluconate is most frequently used in schistosomiasis.

Antimony Gluconate Sodium
Sodium stibogluconate Use and Manufacturing
The replacement reaction of calcium gluconate and sodium carbonate produces sodium gluconate, and then the antimony reaction is carried out with antimony trichloride to obtain trivalent antimony sodium salt of gluconate, and finally it is oxidized to sodium antimony gluconate with hydrogen peroxide.
Sodium stibogluconate is a pentavalent antimony derivative that is highly active against Leishmania amastigotes in macrophages. Sodium stibogluconate has diverse effects on both this intracellular parasite and its host cell.

Drug Function and Efficacy
This product is a pentavalent antimony compound. It has no effect on promastigotes grown in tissue culture, but has a good effect on parasites in the body (no promastigotes), suggesting that pentavalent antimony must be reduced to trivalent antimony to work. Its mechanism of action is unknown, but it is known that antimony can work by binding to sulfhydryl groups. The drug is taken up through selective intracellular endocytosis and enters the phagosome of macrophages, where the Leishmania parasites are eliminated.
