In fire fighting, the minimum respiratory protection required above 0.002 mg/cu m is a self-contained breathing apparatus with a full facepiece operated in pressure-demand or other positive pressure mode. /Soluble platinum salts/

Persons not wearing protective equipment and clothing should be restricted from areas of spills until cleanup has been completed. If soluble platinum salts or liquids containing soluble salts are spilled, the following steps should be taken: 1. Ventilate area of spill; 2. Collect spilled material in the most convenient and safe manner for reclamation or for disposal in a secured sanitary landfill. Toxicity

Three groups of adult male cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) were exposed to either 200 ug/cu m ammonium hexachloroplatinate, 200 ug/cu m ammonium hexachloroplatinate concurrently with 1 ppm ozone, or to 1 ppm ozone only. The animals were exposed by inhalation for 6 hr per day, 5 days per week for 12 wk. Two weeks after the 12 wk exposures, baseline pulmonary function was not significantly affected by the exposure regimens; however, the combination of exposure to ozone and ammonium hexachloroplatinate significantly reduced the concentration of platinum salt and methacholine necessary to increase average pulmonary flow resistance 200% (EC200 resistance). Ozone or platinum exposure alone had no significant effect on these parameters. Platinum and methacholine EC200 resistance values were highly correlated for both platinum exposed groups after exposure. These data indicated that combined ozone and platinum exposure significantly increased specific (platinum) and nonspecific (methacholine) bronchial hyperreactivity more often than did exposure to either ozone or the platinum salt alone. Combined ozone plus platinum exposure also significantly increases the incidence of positive platinum skin tests when compared with the other exposure groups. Similar to the human experience, radioallergosorbent testing for platinum specific antibodies was not as sensitive as direct skin testing in identifying allergic persons.
