Fumes in moist air. Hydrolyzes exothermically and vigorously on contact with water to generate chromic acid, hydrochloric acid and some chlorine [Merck, 11th ed., 1989]. Chromium oxychloride reacts with water to generate gaseous HCl. Based on a scenario where the chemical is spilled into an excess of water (at least 5 fold excess of water), half of the maximum theoretical yield of Hydrogen Chloride gas will be created in 10 minutes. CHROMIUM OXYCHLORIDE is a powerful and often violent oxidizing agent. Reacts readily with many inorganic and organic materials in the absence of a dilutent. Contact with hydrogen sulfide or phosphine can cause ignition. Contact with phosphorus tribromide, acetone, ethanol, ether, and turpentine causes ignition. Contact with moist phosphorus or with phosphorus trichloride leads to explosive reaction. Contact with ammonia causes incandescence. Toxicity
IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Chromyl chloride (CC) is a deep red liquid, which appears black under reflected light. It is used as a catalyst for polymerization of olefins; oxidation of hydrocarbons; in Etard reaction for production of aldehydes and ketones; in the prepn of various coordination complexes of Cr. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: There is no data available. ANIMAL STUDIES: CC was assayed for mutagenicity in the Ames reversion test. The liquid phase of CC elicited dose-related mutations in Salmonella typhimurium, strain TA100, although it had a limited range of activity because of its toxicity to the bacteria. The mutagenic potency and the toxic activity were of the same order of magnitude as all the water-soluble Cr6+ compounds so far tested. Toxic and mutagenic activities could also be clearly detected by using a variety of modifications of the Ames test in CC vapors which indicates the particular danger of this chromium compound. In analogy with the other Cr6+ compounds previously tested, all the effects observed were decreased in the presence of S-9 mix containing rat liver post-mitochondrial fractions.
Chromyl chloride is easily hydrolyzed(1). Chromyl chloride can react violently in water forming chromic acid, chromic chloride, hydrochloric acid and chlorine(2). It decomposes in daylight within a week via CrO2 and Cl2 to form a series of chromium oxides and chlorides with a low degree of oxidation(1).

Drug Information
Inhalation causes severe irritation of upper respiratory system. Contact with eyes or skin causes irritation and burning. Ingestion causes burning of mouth and stomach. (USCG, 1999)
Eye: If this chemical contacts the eyes, immediately wash the eyes with large amounts of water, occasionally lifting the lower and upper lids. Get medical attention immediately. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical. Skin: If this chemical contacts the skin, immediately flush the contaminated skin with water. If this chemical penetrates the clothing, immediately remove the clothing and flush the skin with water. Get medical attention promptly. Breathing: If a person breathes large amounts of this chemical, move the exposed person to fresh air at once. If breathing has stopped, perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
