Methods of Manufacturing

Preparati -5-(hydroxymethyl)pyrrolidin-2-one (3) [0448] To a solution consisting of (i?)-methyl 5-oxopyrrolidine-2-carboxylate (intermediate 2, 13.2 g, 115 mmol) in methanol (100 mL) at 0°C was added sodium borohydride (10.5 g, 278 mmol) in portions. The reaction mixture was stirred at 0°C until completion, at which time, acetic acid (3 mL) was added. The reaction mixture was concentrated and the residue was purified on silica gel, eluting with methanol-chloroform (1 :9 v/v) to afford the title intermediate (12.9 g, 97percent) as a colorless solid; TLC R 0.33 (solvent system: 1 :9 v/v methanol-chloroform);
