(b) 6-Amino-3-nitro-2-picoline (20 g, 0.131 mol) was suspended in a mixture of conc. H2S04 (23.7 ml) and water (335 ml). More cone. H2S04 (20 ml) was added under ice- cooling, but the amine did not dissolve completely. The suspension was added in ice (100 g) before a solution of NaNO2 (13.53 g, 0.196 mol) in water (40 ml) was added drop wise. Gas evolution was observed. The brown suspension was stirred at 10°C for 1 hr, filtered and washed with water.
