Maleic anhydride Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The synthesis methods of maleic anhydride mainly include benzene oxidation method, butene oxidation method, butane oxidation method, etc. At present, most of the production uses benzene oxidation method, that is, benzene is used as a raw material to obtain maleic anhydride through catalytic oxidation. A fixed-bed or ebullated-bed reactor is used to oxidize benzene to maleic anhydride with air under the action of a V-Mo-P catalyst. The reaction temperature is 365°C. Then absorb with water to produce maleic acid aqueous solution, and then use xylene for azeotropic distillation and dehydration to obtain maleic anhydride, and finally vacuum distillation to obtain the finished product.

Uses

In Diels-Alder syntheses (as a dienophile), manufacture of alkyd-type of resins, dye intermediates, pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals (maleic hydrazide, malathion), in copolymerization reactions.
