Description

Solid

Atracurium is a diester compound consisting of pentane-1,5-diol with both hydroxyls bearing 3-[1-(3,4-dimethoxybenzyl)-6,7-dimethoxy-2-methyl-3,4-dihydroisoquinolinium-2(1H)-yl]propanoyl groups. It has a role as a muscle relaxant and a nicotinic antagonist. It is a quaternary ammonium ion and a diester.|A non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with short duration of action. Its lack of significant cardiovascular effects and its lack of dependence on good kidney function for elimination provide clinical advantage over alternate non-depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents.

Atracurium besylate is a white to yellow-white powder with slight hygroscopicity. It is soluble in water and very soluble in ethanol, acetonitrile and dichloromethane. It contains three isomers: cis-cis, cis-trans and trans-trans.

ChEBI: Atracurium besylate is the bisbenzenesulfonate salt of atracurium. It has a role as a nicotinic antagonist and a muscle relaxant. It is a quaternary ammonium salt and an organosulfonate salt. It contains an atracurium.

Drug Information

Drugs that interrupt transmission at the skeletal neuromuscular junction without causing depolarization of the motor end plate. They prevent acetylcholine from triggering muscle contraction and are used as muscle relaxants during electroshock treatments, in convulsive states, and as anesthesia adjuvants. (See all compounds classified as Neuromuscular Nondepolarizing Agents.)|Drugs that bind to nicotinic cholinergic receptors (RECEPTORS, NICOTINIC) and block the actions of acetylcholine or cholinergic agonists. Nicotinic antagonists block synaptic transmission at autonomic ganglia, the skeletal neuromuscular junction, and at central nervous system nicotinic synapses. (See all compounds classified as Nicotinic Antagonists.)

Atracurium besylate Use and Manufacturing

Atracurium besylate is a neuromuscular-blocking drug or skeletal muscle relaxant in the category ofnon-depolarizing neuromuscular-blocking drugs, used adjunctively in anesthesiato facilitate endotracheal intubation and to provide skeletal muscle relaxationduring surgery or mechanical ventilation. The drug atracurium besylate can be used most advantageously if muscle twitch response to peripheral nerve stimulation is monitored.
