Ionone Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Ionone was first produced by Tiemann in 1893 by combining citral and acetone to produce pseudoionone, and then cyclized. The condensation reaction of lemon and acetone is usually carried out in the presence of an aqueous or hydroalcoholic solution of caustic soda, and solid caustic soda, benzene solution of sodium phenolate and other alkaline reagents can also be used. The cyclization of pseudoionone is carried out in the presence of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and formic acid, aluminum chloride, ferric chloride, zinc chloride, boron fluoride, etc. The use of 60-65% sulfuric acid or concentrated phosphoric acid can cause pseudo-ionone cyclization, and produce α-ionone-based substances that are valuable for perfumery. A large amount of diluted sulfuric acid will slow down the cyclization process, and will leave a lot of unreacted pseudoionone, resulting in less α-ionone and more β-ionone. The type and concentration of acid used in the cyclization reaction are different, and the ratio of α- and β-ionone produced will also change accordingly.

Uses

This product is the main fragrance of floral fragrances such as violet, acacia, osmanthus, orchid, etc. It is widely used in cosmetics and soaps, and can also be used as fruit food essences such as bayberry. It is a edible fragrance that is permitted by my country~
