Description
Shrubs growing in thickets in several Mediterranean islands (Crete,
Cyprus) and countries (Spain particularly). In the Spanish region
of Zamora, C. ladaniferus L. and its varieties-C. albiflorus Dun.,
C. stenophyllus Dun.t C. maculatus D un-are predominant. On the
other hand, the extractive use of C. creticus growing on the island
of Crete is steadily decreasing.
Labdanum resin consists of the secretion of the glandular hairs
covering the inferior part of the leaves (spring and summer).
Essential oils, labdanum Use and Manufacturing
The crude gum resin is extracted from the branches and leaves of the perennial shrub Cistus labdaniferus, which is obtained by steam distillation. The yield is 1% to 2%. It is mainly produced in the coastal countries in the middle of the region, and also produced in Jiangsu and Zhejiang in my country.
GB 2760-96 stipulates the allowable food flavors. Mainly used to prepare tobacco flavors.
