1,2-Dihydro-4-methyl-3,6-pyridazinedione Use and Manufacturing

Citraconic anhydride (24.0 mL, 270 mmol) was added slowly to an ice-cooled mixture of hydrazine (4 M aqueous solution buffered to pH 6.5 by AcOH; 200 mL) and EtOH (250 mL) to give a pale yellow heterogenous mixture. The mixture was heated at gentle reflux for 24 h, allowed to cool to ambient temperature and the EtOH removed in vacuo to give a white heterogenous mixture. The mixture was diluted with water (250 mL). The resulting white precipitate was collected by filtration, washing with water, and dried in vacuo at ambient temperature for 24 h over phosphorus pentoxide to give the title compound as a white powder (21.8 g; 65percent).
