Oxidation with 4-methylpyridine by air produces 4-pyridinecarboxaldehyde, which is then oximated with hydroxylamine sulfate to obtain the product.

Uses

An intermediate for bis(hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)butenes as reactivators of chlorpyrifos-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.
