(NTP, 1992)|Methylene bis(thiocyanate) is a member of the class of thiocyanates that is methane in which two of the hycrogens have been replaced by thiocyanato groups. Used as a biocide for the control of various pathogens and algae in industrial water systems and as a fungicide for the control of surface moulds and sapstain fungi on wood. It has a role as a fungicide and an antibacterial agent.

METHYLENEBIS(THIOCYANATE) reacts vigorously with strong bases and strong oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide. Hydrolyzes slowly with water at boiling temperatures and reacts slowly and exothermically with aqueous acids (NTP, 1992).

SMALL SPILLS AND LEAKAGE: Should a spill occur while you are handling this chemical, FIRST REMOVE ALL SOURCES OF IGNITION, then you should dampen the solid spill material with 60-70% ethanol and transfer the dampened material to a suitable container. Use absorbent paper dampened with 60-70% ethanol to pick up any remaining material. Seal the absorbent paper, and any of your clothes, which may be contaminated, in a vapor-tight plastic bag for eventual disposal. Solvent wash all contaminated surfaces with 60-70% ethanol followed by washing with a soap and water solution. Do not reenter the contaminated area until the Safety Officer (or other responsible person) has verified that the area has been properly cleaned. STORAGE PRECAUTIONS: You should keep this material in a tightly closed container under an inert atmosphere, and store it at refrigerated temperatures. (NTP, 1992)
MINIMUM PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: If Tyvek-type disposable protective clothing is not worn during handling of this chemical, wear disposable Tyvek-type sleeves taped to your gloves. RECOMMENDED RESPIRATOR: Where the neat test chemical is weighed and diluted, wear a NIOSH-approved half face respirator equipped with a combination filter cartridge, i.e. organic vapor/acid gas/HEPA (specific for organic vapors, HCl, acid gas, SO2 and a high efficiency particulate filter). Splash proof safety goggles should be worn while handling this chemical. Alternatively, a full face respirator, equipped as above, may be used to provide simultaneous eye and respiratory protection. Methylene thiocyanate's production and use as a termiticide, wood preservative, slimicide and fungicide(1,2) will result in its release to the environment(SRC).
TERRESTRIAL FATE: Methylene thiocyanate is expected to hydrolyze in moist soils(1,SRC). Volatilization from soil surfaces and adsorption to soil are not expected to be important environmental fate processes because of hydrolysis(SRC).|AQUATIC FATE: Methylene thiocyanate is expected to hydrolyze in water within a few hours at neutral pH(1). Volatilization from water surfaces, adsorption to suspended solids and sediments, biodegradation, and bioconcentration are not expected to be important in aquatic systems because of hydrolysis(SRC).|ATMOSPHERIC FATE: According to a model of gas/particle partitioning of semivolatile organic compounds in the atmosphere(1), methylene thiocyanate, which has an estimated vapor pressure of 1.97X10-3 mm Hg at 25 °C(2,SRC), is expected to exist solely as a vapor in the ambient atmosphere. Vapor-phase methylene thiocyanate is degraded in the atmosphere by reaction with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals(SRC); the half-life for this reaction in air is estimated to be about 7 hours(3,SRC).
ONE OF THE BIOCIDE ACTIVE INGREDIENTS IN COOLING SYSTEMS METHYLENE BIS(THIOCYANATE) ACTS QUICKLY TO KILL MICROORGANISMS & THEN DISSIPATES IN A FEW HOURS AT NEUTRAL PH.|The rate constant for the vapor-phase reaction of methylene thiocyanate with photochemically-produced hydroxyl radicals has been estimated as 5.7X10-11 cu cm/molecule-sec at 25 °C(SRC) using a structure estimation method(1,SRC). This corresponds to an atmospheric half-life of about 7 hours at an atmospheric concentration of 5X10+5 hydroxyl radicals per cu cm(2,SRC). Methylene thiocyanate is expected to hydrolyze in water within a few hours at neutral pH(3).
Bioconcentration is not expected to be an important environmental fate process for methylene thiocyanate because this compound is expected to hydrolyze in aquatic environments(1).
Adsorption of methylene thiocyanate is not expected to be important because this compound hydrolyzes rapidly(1).

NIOSH (NOES Survey 1981-1983) has statistically estimated that 23,921 workers (918 of these are female) are potentially exposed to methylene thiocyanate in the US(1). Occupational exposure may occur through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where methylene thiocyanate is produced or used(SRC). The general population may be exposed to methylene thiocyanate through inhalation and dermal contact with this compound where it is used as a termiticide, wood preservative, slimicide and fungicide(SRC).

... Chemical disposition studies of (14)C labeled methylene bis(thiocyanate) were conducted in male F344/N rats. In these studies more than 90% of the admin radioactivity was eliminated in 48 hr. ... As the dose was incr from 0.2 to 1 to 10 mg/kg, greater percentages of the admin radioactivity remained in the tissues. Blood cyanide concn were incr shortly after the admin of 10 mg/kg (14)C methylene bis(thiocyanate) but were similar to control values 2 hr after dosing.
SYMPTOMS: Symptoms of exposure to this compound include severe eye damage, skin and respiratory tract irritation, corrosion, breathing difficulty, pulmonary edema and allergic skin reactions. It may also cause lacrimation. ACUTE/CHRONIC HAZARDS: This compound is a lacrimator. It can cause severe eye damage, skin irritation and corrosive. When heated to decomposition it emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. (NTP, 1992)
EYES: First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. SKIN: IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital for treatment after washing the affected areas. INHALATION: IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing. INGESTION: DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Corrosive chemicals will destroy the membranes of the mouth, throat, and esophagus and, in addition, have a high risk of being aspirated into the victim's lungs during vomiting which increases the medical problems. If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital. If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Transport the victim IMMEDIATELY to a hospital. (NTP, 1992)

a total of 34 workers in a paper mill exposed to small amounts of slimicide used in paper and board manufacturing were tested for sensitization potential to methylene-bis-thiocyanate, a component of cytox-3522. The chemicals used in the factory were fennosan-M9 and germirex-849 containing 9 and 10% of methylene-bis-thiocyanate. There were no dermatological symptoms in any of the workers tested. Workers with positive reactions to high concn of cytox-3522 were tested with 0.1 and 0.03% cytox-3522. The patch tests were applied for 24 hr and read on the third and fifth days. No subject had definite positive reactions to cytox-3522.
