WHITE POWDER OR SOLID IN VARIOUS FORMS.


Lauroyl peroxide appears as a white solid with a faint soapy odor. Less dense than water and insoluble in water. Hence floats on water. Melting point 49°C. Toxic by ingestion and inhalation. Excerpt from ERG Guide 145 [Organic Peroxides (Heat and Contamination Sensitive)]: As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters (75 feet) for solids. LARGE SPILL: Consider initial evacuation for at least 250 meters (800 feet) in all directions. FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. Keep combustibles (wood, paper, oil, etc.) away from spilled material. Do not touch damaged containers or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Keep substance wet using water spray. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. SMALL SPILL: Pick up with inert, damp, non-combustible material using clean, non-sparking tools and place into loosely covered plastic containers for later disposal. LARGE SPILL: Wet down with water and dike for later disposal. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. Lauroyl peroxide Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

It is derived from the reaction of lauryl chloride and hydrogen peroxide. Dissolve lauryl chloride in petroleum ether, add sodium hydroxide, and then add 6% hydrogen peroxide to oxidize. When the temperature rises to 45°C, under vigorous stirring, add ice water to the reaction mixture to cool, stir to filter out the crystals, wash until neutral, and dry to obtain the finished product.

Uses

High-efficiency initiator for polyvinyl chloride and high-pressure polyethylene; often used together with initiator A (di-tert-butyl peroxide). It is used as a bleaching agent in the food industry and stained grease. This product is a first-class organic oxidant and is covered with water during storage.
