CAUTION: For Acetyl chloride (UN1717), use CO2 or dry chemical only. SMALL FIRE: CO2, dry chemical, dry sand, alcohol-resistant foam. LARGE FIRE: Water spray, fog or alcohol-resistant foam. FOR CHLOROSILANES, DO NOT USE WATER; use AFFF alcohol-resistant medium-expansion foam. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. Use water spray or fog; do not use straight streams. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. SMALL SPILL: Cover with DRY earth, DRY sand or other non-combustible material followed with plastic sheet to minimize spreading or contact with rain. Extremely destructive to the eyes, nose, throat, and upper respiratory tract. May be fatal as a result of spasm, inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis, and pulmonary edema. Symptoms of exposure include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. (USCG, 1999)

Call a physician. EYES: Hold eyelids open, flush with water for at least 15 minutes. SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing, flush affected areas with water. INHALATION: Move victim to fresh air. If breathing has stopped, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. INGESTION: Do nothing except keep victim warm. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. (USCG, 1999)

Methyl dichloroacetate Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Derived from the esterification of dichloroacetic acid and methanol. First put the dichloroacetic acid into the reaction pot, heat it to 120°C, add methanol dropwise to react, the resulting ester and water are continuously steamed out, and the steam condenser is cooled to a mixture of ester, water, alcohol, and acid, and flows into the water separator. The lower part flows into the crude methyl dichloroacetate storage tank through the liquid-sealed pipe, and the alcohol and water overflow from the trap and return to the reaction pot to continue the reaction. The crude methyl dichloroacetate is neutralized to slightly alkaline with a 10% sodium carbonate solution at room temperature, and the ester layer is washed with water after the layer is separated. The crude ester is distilled under reduced pressure to separate low boilers such as water and methanol, and collect the fraction above 65°C (8.0kPa) to obtain the finished product. Each ton of product consumes 1, 100kg of dichloroacetic acid (≥90%) and 360kg of methanol.

Uses

Intermediate for pharmaceutical synthesis. Used in the manufacture of drugs such as mycotoxin and chloramphenicol. It is also used in the dye industry.
