(±)-Mercaptosuccinic acid Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Maleic anhydride is hydrated to generate maleic acid, which is then reacted with hydrogen sulfide to obtain the product. For laboratory preparation, 23.2g malic acid and 20g thioacetic acid can be dissolved in 80ml ethyl acetate and refluxed for 1h. After cooling, 400ml of benzene is added for extraction, activated carbon is added for decolorization, the carbon is removed by filtration, and benzene is recovered to obtain a crude product. After refining, 32g of acetylthiomalic acid was obtained, with a melting point of 126°C. After further hydrolysis, mercaptosuccinic acid is obtained.

Uses

This product is the main component of cold foiling agent, also used in complex concealment, biochemical research, heavy metal antidote and rubber industry.
