m-Xylene Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

The preparation method is to use petroleum xylene or coal tar xylene for separation. The separation method can be low temperature crystallization method, compound method, adsorption method and sulfonation hydrolysis method. In the past, m-xylene was produced by sulfonation hydrolysis method in China, but now m-xylene has been separated by adsorption method. The adsorption method uses molecular sieve as the adsorbent, which can perform gas phase adsorption or liquid phase adsorption. The process is described as follows. (1) Sulfonation and hydrolysis method The mixed xylene is cut by distillation to obtain a fraction of 130-140°C, and then sulfuric acid is added to sulfonate. The reaction temperature is 80-90°C and the reaction time is 3.5h. Then, the sulfonated xylene is separated and then hydrolyzed 、Distillation, cut the 140~150℃ fraction to get the finished product. This method has serious corrosion to the equipment, and there are more three wastes, which can only be produced on a small scale, so it is replaced by the adsorption method. (2) Adsorption method adopts molecular sieve for liquid phase adsorption or gas phase adsorption. Liquid phase adsorption uses K-Ba-Y type as adsorbent and toluene as desorbent. It is continuously adsorbed and separated in a moving bed. The operating temperature is 65~85℃. The ratio of agent to raw material is not greater than 10, and the ratio of desorption agent to raw material is greater than 5. Gas phase adsorption also uses K-Ba-Y molecular sieve as the adsorbent, the adsorption temperature is 170 ~ 180 ℃, and the operating pressure is normal pressure. Adsorption separation method is a new method for separating xylene in modern times.

Uses

Meta-Xylene is used for the production of isophthalic acid, of agriculture chemicals as pharmaceuticals. It finds applications in paint and varnish removers and aerosol paint concentrates. Product Data Sheet
