Description

Cyanic acid is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula HCNO. It is a colorless liquid or gas with a strong pungent acetic acid smell. Its melting point is -86°C (-122.8°F), boiling point is 23.5°C (74.3°F), density is 1.140 at 20°C (68°F), and it is soluble in water, alcohol, ether, benzene and toluene. Cyanic acid is a volatile and corrosive liquid, highly toxic, and is strongly acidic in aqueous solution. It is unstable and easily polymerized. It generates ammonia and carbon dioxide when hydrolyzed. Cyanic acid decomposes when heated. Rapid heating may cause explosion. When heated to high temperature, it decomposes to produce carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen oxides.

Cyanic acid is prepared in the laboratory by dry distillation of cyanuric acid, C3N3(OH)3. Cyanic acid can be used to prepare cyanate esters, 3-METHYLURIC ACID (CAS Number: 605-99-2), 1,1-DIMETHYLUREA (CAS Number: 598-94-7), Benzamide (CAS Number: 55-21-0), Glycine, N-(aminocarbonyl)- (CAS Number: 462-60-2)
