Azo, Diazo, Azido, Hydrazine, and Azide Compounds

Explosive

Self-decomposition or self-ignition may be triggered by heat, chemical reaction, friction or impact. Self-accelerating decomposition may occur if the specific control temperature is not maintained. 2,2'-AZODI-(2,4-DIMETHYLVALERONITRILE) is an azo compound. Azo, diazo, azido compounds can detonate. This applies in particular to organic azides that have been sensitized by the addition of metal salts or strong acids. Toxic gases are formed by mixing materials of this class with acids, aldehydes, amides, carbamates, cyanides, inorganic fluorides, halogenated organics, isocyanates, ketones, metals, nitrides, peroxides, phenols, epoxides, acyl halides, and strong oxidizing or reducing agents. Flammable gases are formed by mixing materials in this group with alkali metals. Explosive combination can occur with strong oxidizing agents, metal salts, peroxides, and sulfides.

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: Self-decomposition, self-polymerization, or self-ignition may be triggered by heat, chemical reaction, friction or impact. Self-accelerating decomposition may occur if the specific control temperature is not maintained. These materials are particularly sensitive to temperature rises. Above a given "Control Temperature" they decompose or polymerize violently and may catch fire. May be ignited by heat, sparks or flames. Those substances designated with a (P) may polymerize explosively when heated or involved in a fire. Some may decompose explosively when heated or involved in a fire. May burn violently. Decomposition or polymerization may be self-accelerating and produce large amounts of gases. Vapors or dust may form explosive mixtures with air. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: The temperature of the substance must be maintained at or below the "Control Temperature" at all times. SMALL FIRE: Dry chemical, CO2, water spray or regular foam. LARGE FIRE: Flood fire area with water from a distance. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: BEWARE OF POSSIBLE CONTAINER EXPLOSION. Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area in all directions for at least 50 meters (150 feet) for liquids and at least 25 meters (75 feet) for solids. LARGE SPILL: Consider initial evacuation for at least 250 meters (800 feet) in all directions. FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. SMALL SPILL: Pick up with inert, damp, non-combustible material using clean, non-sparking tools and place into loosely covered plastic containers for later disposal. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. DO NOT CLEAN-UP OR DISPOSE OF, EXCEPT UNDER SUPERVISION OF A SPECIALIST. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: Wear positive pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). Wear chemical protective clothing that is specifically recommended by the manufacturer. It may provide little or no thermal protection. Structural firefighters' protective clothing will only provide limited protection. (ERG, 2016)

Drug Information

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: Inhalation or contact with vapors, substance or decomposition products may cause severe injury or death. May produce irritating, toxic and/or corrosive gases. Runoff from fire control may cause pollution. (ERG, 2016)

Excerpt from ERG Guide 150 [Substances (Self-Reactive / Temperature Controlled)]: Ensure that medical personnel are aware of the material(s) involved and take precautions to protect themselves. Move victim to fresh air. Call 911 or emergency medical service. Give artificial respiration if victim is not breathing. Administer oxygen if breathing is difficult. Remove and isolate contaminated clothing and shoes. In case of contact with substance, immediately flush skin or eyes with running water for at least 20 minutes. Keep victim calm and warm. 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl)valeronitrile

2,2′-Azobis[2,4-dimethylvaleronitrile] Use and Manufacturing

Methods of Manufacturing

Using methyl isobutyl ketone as raw material, condensed with hydrazine hydrate to obtain hexanone azide, hexanone azide and hydrogen cyanide cyanation reaction to obtain diisoheptanonitrile, and finally oxidized with nitrogen to obtain azobisisoheptanonitrile The crude azobisisoheptanonitrile is dissolved in 30~35℃ ethanol, and then cooled to below 0℃ to crystallize to obtain the finished product. The reaction steps are as follows: the industrial azobisisoheptanonitrile is white crystals with an ester content of 99%.

Uses

2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl)valeronitrile is widely used in PVC suspension polymerization, it is also used as polyacrylonitrile, polyvinyl alcohol polymer composite materials such as plexiglass efficient initiator, also used as rubber, plastic foam.
