Chlordane is a viscous, amber-colored liquid. Technical grade chlordane is a mixture of many structurally related compounds including trans-chlordane, cis-chlordane, -chlordene, heptachlor, and trans-nonachlor. 14,15 Chlordane was used as a broad-spectrum pesticide in the United States from 1948 to 1988. Chlorindan Use and Manufacturing
Cyclopentadiene is chlorinated with chlorine gas to obtain tetrachlorocyclopentane at 40-60°C, further heated and chlorinated to obtain polychlorinated cyclopentane, which is vaporized in a vaporization kettle with chlorine gas at 500-560°C Chlorolysis yields hexachlorocyclopentadiene. Hexachlorocyclopentadiene reacts with cyclopentadiene at about 55°C to form chloridine, and then chlorinates at about 80°C to obtain chlordane.
