Methods of Manufacturing

It is obtained by dehydration of pinacol (tetramethyl glycol) catalyzed by hydrobromic acid. Slowly heat pinacol and 48% hydrobromic acid, and collect the distillate until 95°C. The upper layer is washed with water containing a small amount of hydroquinone, dried with anhydrous calcium chloride, and then fractionated to obtain the finished product.

Uses

Used in the manufacture of synthetic rubber and polymers.
