Toxicity

IDENTIFICATION AND USE: Triethylamine hydrochloride forms hexagonal crystals. It used in preparation of quaternary ammonium compounds. HUMAN EXPOSURE AND TOXICITY: There is no data available. ANIMAL STUDIES: The hemolytic actions of some short-chain alkylamine hydrochlorides were studied. Tertiary salts such as triethylamine hydrochloride produced incomplete hemolysis of dog erythrocytes in vitro, whereas primary salts produced complete hemolysis.

Increases in antibacterial and antifungal properties in vitro, due to the triethylammonium chloride complexation of N-substituted N'-cyano-O-(triphenylstannyl)isoureas, are discussed.

Drug Information

Immediate first aid: Ensure that adequate decontamination has been carried out. If patient is not breathing, start artificial respiration, preferably with a demand-valve resuscitator, bag-valve-mask device, or pocket mask, as trained. Perform CPR as necessary. Immediately flush contaminated eyes with gently flowing water. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, lean patient forward or place on left side (head-down position, if possible) to maintain an open airway and prevent aspiration. Keep patient quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Uses

Used as basic raw materials for quaternary ammonium salts, medicines, pesticides, dyes and other organic synthesis; manufacturing quaternary ammonium compounds. Organic Synthesis. Triethylamine hydrochloride is mainly used in organic synthesis and the preparation of fourth amine compounds.

Ethanamine, N,N-diethyl-, hydrochloride (1:1): ACTIVE|By using trimethylamine hydrochloride and triethylamine hydrochloride, it was determined that the stimulant action of nicotine in the brain paralleled the nicotine effect in the ganglia of rabbits.

The value of capillary electrophoresis (CE) and combined capillary electrophoresis-electrospray mass spectrometry (CE-ES-MS) for the analysis of simple quaternary ammonium ions, including herbicides, has been assessed. Choline, chlormequat, known contaminants of their formulation products, and some other small ammonium cations have been examined. Lacking a chromophore, the cations were detected by inverse UV absorption utilizing a buffer containing creatinine as visualization agent. In this way, all six cations could be resolved, detected and quantified within 8 min. To confirm the identities of the ammonium ions, coupled ES-MS provided mass measurement on all migrating cations. The triaxial probe proved to be an efficient interface for examining the small cations (m/z 60-124) by CE-ES-MS. Results on three formulation products containing chlormequat have been obtained by CE and CE-ES-MS, and compared with quantitative data from analysis by ion chromatography.
