Description
Cyclopentene is a cycloolefin, i.e. cyclopentane with a double bond in the ring, and is an organic compound. Its chemical formula is C5H8, and its molecular weight is 68.12. It is a colorless liquid with a special sweet and petroleum smell. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene. It is mainly used as a comonomer, solvent, and can also be used in organic synthesis. Its vapor is heavier than air, and inhaling high concentrations may produce anesthetic effects. Cyclopentene is highly flammable, and its vapor can form an explosive mixture with air. When exposed to open flames, high heat, or contact with oxidants, cyclopentene is at risk of causing combustion and explosion. Because its vapor is heavier than air, it can spread to a considerable distance at a lower level, and it will catch fire and burn back when it encounters a fire source.

Excerpt from ERG Guide 128 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Immiscible)]: CAUTION: All these products have a very low flash point: Use of water spray when fighting fire may be inefficient. CAUTION: For mixtures containing alcohol or polar solvent, alcohol-resistant foam may be more effective. SMALL FIRE: Dry chemical, CO2, water spray or regular foam. LARGE FIRE: Water spray, fog or regular foam. Do not use straight streams. Move containers from fire area if you can do it without risk. FIRE INVOLVING TANKS OR CAR/TRAILER LOADS: Fight fire from maximum distance or use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles. Cool containers with flooding quantities of water until well after fire is out. Withdraw immediately in case of rising sound from venting safety devices or discoloration of tank. ALWAYS stay away from tanks engulfed in fire. For massive fire, use unmanned hose holders or monitor nozzles; if this is impossible, withdraw from area and let fire burn. (ERG, 2016)
Excerpt from ERG Guide 128 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Immiscible)]: As an immediate precautionary measure, isolate spill or leak area for at least 50 meters (150 feet) in all directions. LARGE SPILL: Consider initial downwind evacuation for at least 300 meters (1000 feet). FIRE: If tank, rail car or tank truck is involved in a fire, ISOLATE for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions; also, consider initial evacuation for 800 meters (1/2 mile) in all directions. (ERG, 2016)
Excerpt from ERG Guide 128 [Flammable Liquids (Water-Immiscible)]: ELIMINATE all ignition sources (no smoking, flares, sparks or flames in immediate area). All equipment used when handling the product must be grounded. Do not touch or walk through spilled material. Stop leak if you can do it without risk. Prevent entry into waterways, sewers, basements or confined areas. A vapor-suppressing foam may be used to reduce vapors. Absorb or cover with dry earth, sand or other non-combustible material and transfer to containers. Use clean, non-sparking tools to collect absorbed material. LARGE SPILL: Dike far ahead of liquid spill for later disposal. Water spray may reduce vapor, but may not prevent ignition in closed spaces. (ERG, 2016)
Self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing. (USCG, 1999)
Drug Information
May be harmful by inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. May cause eye and skin irritation. (USCG, 1999)
INHALATION: Call a physician. If inhaled, remove victim to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. EYES: Separate eyelids with finger. Flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes. SKIN: Flush with water. (USCG, 1999)

Cyclopentene Use and Manufacturing
Cyclopentene is used in organic synthesis and for cross-linking resins. It is used as an intermediate in pesticides, dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic materials, chemicals, and other industries. It is used as a monomer for the synthesis of plastics and rubber. It is also used to synthesize various chemicals, such as 1,1,2-trimethylcyclohexane. Cyclopentene is synthesized by selective hydrogenation of cyclopentadiene or dehydration of cyclopentanol. Industrially, it is produced in large quantities by steam cracking of naphtha. In the laboratory, cyclopentene is prepared by dehydration of cyclopentanol. Cyclopentene is present in coal tar, cigarette smoke and automobile exhaust.
