FMC is committed to promoting the sustainable development of green agriculture in China

2022-11-18

As a world’s leading agricultural technology company, with world-class basic R&D capabilities, FMC focuses on providing innovative agricultural solutions and application technologies to help global growers adapt to changes and promote the sustainable development of green agriculture.

Enhance the layout in the Chinese market

Established in 1883 with headquartered in Philadelphia, FMC entered the Chinese market in the 1980s and was one of the first US multinational enterprises to establish Sino-US trade cooperative relations with China. With the acquisition of DuPont’s business in November 2017 and the integration of its assets, FMC has moved into the first tier of top agrochemical companies. Today, the company has 5 major R&D sites and 21 manufacturing sites around the world.

Since its establishment in Shanghai, FMC has enhanced the layout of the Chinese market. The registered capital increased from $2 million to $32 million in 2013, and further increased to $52.5 million in 2014.

Wu, president of FMC in China, introduced that the company’s business in China continues to grow as our supply chain and production base continue to build capacity. It now has more than $180 million in direct investment in China, including the multinational’s regional headquarters in Shanghai, a world-class Asian innovation center and two factories in Shanghai and Jiangsu province, as well as a nationwide sales and service team.

Located in Zhangjiang Science City, the FMC Analytical Laboratory is one of only two FMC Analytical laboratories in the world with GLP certification from OECD member countries. The other is the global R&D headquarters in the United States. As one of the first accredited laboratories approved by MOA PRC, this laboratory has a leading position in the industry and undertakes 60% of FMC's chemical analytical experiments worldwide.

Innovation from the perspective of the grower

China is a big agricultural country and is now going through a crucial process of modernization of farmers, agriculture and rural areas. "In addition to continuing to introduce advanced products to China, we also develop products tailored to the needs of the Chinese market through our local innovative R&D base. Wu said that Based on the current planting situation and challenges in the Chinese market, FMC has started R&D from the ecological management of soil, and launched new product from nature, which can improve soil, reduce fertilizer use, truly achieve weight loss and efficiency, and reduce soil and environmental pollution caused by excessive fertilizer use. The service area has exceeded 3 million mu.

From 2020 to 2022, FMC has developed and delivered six new biological formulations, covering two categories of biopesticides and biostimulants, including Fangtule and Gamet. The latter has served a total area of 2.5 million mu of grain crops in recent years, with an average yield increase of 50 kg per mu, contributing to an estimated grain increase of 130 million kg. In the past three years, FMC has applied different product solutions and helped more than 2 million farmers to provide technical services, driving farmers to increase production and income.

In the face of global food security, global warming, the decreasing area of agricultural arable land, the growing threat and resistance of pests and diseases and other uncertainties, FMC is also trying to take actions. "How to balance the relationship between farmers, consumer and the natural environment, how to sustainably exploit soil and water while steadily increasing food production, protect the ecological environment, meet the growing demand for higher quality agricultural products, and create new, efficient and sustainable agricultural solutions for agriculture and farmers? All of these questions is a biggest challenge and opportunity for FMC, Wu said.
