Announcement of the latest ranking of pharmaceutical companies

ECHEMI 2020-07-06

Affected by large mergers and acquisitions, the ranking of pharmaceutical companies ushered in a major reshuffle.

Pharmaceutical companies rank reshuffle, Roche replaces Pfizer

Recently, the US "Pharmaceutical Manager" released the list of the top 50 global pharmaceutical companies in 2020, and the annual sales ranking of prescription drugs of various pharmaceutical companies is attached to the list.

According to the latest annual drug revenue statistics, for the top 50 pharmaceutical companies, the financial impact of the new coronary pneumonia is very small. However, the top ten rankings have experienced the biggest changes in several years, partly due to the impact of large mergers.

It is understood that Roche (Roche) sales revenue increased by 8.3%, rose by one, ending Pfizer (Pfizer) on the leaderboard for four consecutive years. Avastin (bevacizumab) is still the best-selling product of Roche, accounting for 15% of the company's total pharmaceutical revenue. But like trastuzumab and rituximab, in the next few years, three carriages will also face competition from biosimilars.

As the business grew, Roche's main sales drivers came from multiple sclerosis drugs Ocrevus, hemophilia drugs Hemlibra, and Tecentriq and Perjeta cancer treatment drugs.

Rarely, Roche is the only pharmaceutical company that ranks first in both drug revenues and R&D expenditures in recent years: Roche Pharmaceuticals has a total revenue of US$ 10.3 billion, which is also the only drug with an R&D investment of more than US$ 1 billion Enterprise.

Mostly affected by large acquisitions by pharmaceutical companies

In addition to Roche, Novartis also rose one place from the previous ranking, jumping from third to second place, and drug sales increased by 6%.

In January of this year, the large pharmaceutical company completed its $9.7 billion acquisition of The Medicines Company and acquired inclisiran, a potentially first-rate cholesterol-lowering therapy (starting by using the natural mechanism of human RNA silencing effect). Novartis’ heart failure drug Entresto grew 74% in the fourth quarter of 2019, reaching US$1.7 billion throughout the year; its total revenue in the first quarter of 2020 was US$569 million.

The remaining three companies in the top five are Pfizer, Merck, and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Pfizer fell by two, and sales of prescription drugs also fell by 3.6%, partly due to lower fourth-quarter sales of its neuropathic drug Lyrica, which has multiple competitive generic drugs. Sales of breast cancer treatment Ibrance increased by 20.5% last year.

Pfizer completed the acquisition of cancer-focused Array BioPharma at a price of $11.4 billion in July 2019, and expects other brands such as Eliquis, Xeljanz, Xtandi and Inlyta to continue to grow in the future.

Merck's sales revenue is still heavily influenced by the K drug. Data shows that its cancer immunotherapy Keytruda sales increased by 9.5% to 11.1 billion US dollars, an increase of 54.5%, because the drug continues to receive approval for new indications .

Taken together, the reshuffle of this ranking has a direct impact on the recent large-scale mergers and acquisitions.

Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS) rose from 11th place to 5th place because "Pharmaceutical Manager" included the sales of Xinji Pharmaceutical's prescription drugs. Last year, BMS officially acquired Xinji Pharmaceutical at a price of US$74 billion. Xinji Pharmaceutical's Revlimid achieved sales of nearly US$11 billion, while BMS's Eliquis followed closely, with a year-on-year increase of 23%.

In addition, the demand for blood thinners for the COVID-19 produced by BMS and Pfizer increased its revenue by 37% to US$2.6 billion in the first quarter of 2020.

In the indicator of R&D expenses, the total R&D expenses of BMS and Xinji Pharmaceutical last year amounted to US$9.4 billion, second only to Roche, and Johnson & Johnson and Merck East ranked third and fourth, respectively. It is worth mentioning that in early 2020, due to strong research and development strength of Johnson & Johnson (especially in antibacterial drugs), independent brand business evaluation company Brand Finance rated Johnson & Johnson as the most valuable pharmaceutical company in 2020, and it was also the first batch. One of the companies that announced the development of vaccines during the outbreak of new coronary pneumonia.

Consistent with BMS reasons, Takeda Pharmaceutical's ranking jumped significantly because of a large pharmaceutical company acquisition. Because of the acquisition of Shire, Takeda Pharma also ranks among the top 10 of the top 50 global pharmaceutical companies, and the revenue of this Japanese pharmaceutical manufacturer increased by 67.8% in the first year of completion of the acquisition.

Although AbbVie (ranked No. 8) finally completed the acquisition of Erjian (ranked No. 18) for $62 billion last month, the two have not yet been combined, mainly due to the delay of the new coronary pneumonia pandemic 1. The progress of important mergers and acquisitions. Therefore, in the next 1-2 years, AbbVie's global ranking may quickly rise to the top five.

Four Chinese pharmaceutical companies make the list, Yunnan Baiyao rises fastest

In addition, China's four pharmaceutical companies Yunnan Baiyao (rank 37), China Biopharmaceutical (rank 42), Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceutical (43), and Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group (48) made the list.

Compared with last year's TOP50 global ranking, Yunnan Baiyao had the fastest rise. It was not included in the list last year. It has jumped to 37 this year. China's biopharmaceutical ranking has not changed, Hengrui Pharmaceutical's ranking has risen by 4, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Group's latest On the list.

Yunnan Baiyao's 2019 annual report shows that in 2019, operating income and net profit attributable to mothers are about 29.66 billion yuan and 4.18 billion yuan, respectively, with a year-on-year growth rate of about 9.8% and 19.8%; non-net profit deductions are 2.29 billion, a year-on-year decline of 22.9 %. 2019Q4 operating income and net profit attributable to mothers are about 8 billion yuan and 640 million yuan respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of about 13.9% and 225% respectively.

As a large-scale large-scale pharmaceutical company, Yunnan Baiyao still maintains relatively rapid growth. This may be one of the reasons why it entered the TOP50 global pharmaceutical rankings this year and ranked 37th when it was not listed last year.

Although the ranking of China's biopharmaceuticals has not changed, Hengrui Medicine rose 4 places to 43. Its 2019 annual report shows that it achieved revenue of 23.289 billion yuan, +33.70% year-on-year; net profit attributable to its mother was 5.328 billion yuan, +31.05% year-on-year.

In the ranking, Hengrui Pharmaceuticals' apatinib, sevoflurane, and dexmedetomidine are its best-selling drugs, with sales of US$336 million, US$287 million, and US$233 million, respectively.

In terms of the final sales of best-selling drugs, the sales of Chinese pharmaceutical companies still have a large gap compared with the top 10. According to the statistics of pharmaceutical geographic data, the sales revenue of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies before 2020 accounted for 50% of the total sales revenue. 54.1%, the top 20 sales accounted for 78.9%.
