BASF to Sell Optical Brighteners Business to Catexel
BASF has reached an agreement to divest its optical brighteners business, a unit within its Care Chemicals division, to Catexel. Optical brighteners are key ingredients used in laundry detergent formulations. The financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, and completion is expected in the first quarter of 2026.
The deal covers the global optical brighteners business, including the production site in Monthey, Switzerland, and involves around 80 employees. This divestment supports BASF’s ongoing strategic transformation.
“As part of our ‘Winning Ways’ strategy, we are actively managing our portfolio and sharpening our strategic priorities. Catexel, as a focused and committed new owner, will be well positioned to further develop this business and unlock its full potential,” said Mary Kurian, President of Care Chemicals at BASF.
Catexel is the care chemicals platform of the International Chemical Investors Group (ICIG) and specializes in high-quality specialty chemicals for detergents and cleaning products, personal care, and industrial applications.
Through this acquisition, Catexel aims to expand its product portfolio, offer customers a broader range of premium detergent ingredients, and further strengthen its position as a reliable partner in the market.
Dr. Alexander Snell, President and CEO of Catexel, commented: “This acquisition marks another milestone in Catexel’s growth journey. With the advanced production facility in Switzerland and an experienced team, we are laying a strong foundation for future growth and innovation. It reinforces our role as a trusted partner to our customers and advances our strategic direction.”
