Uganda to set standards for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks

On 6 December 2022, the Uganda Standards Authority released the draft Standard for Carbonated and non-carbonated Soft Drinks (DUS 47:2202) for comments until 4 February 2023. The main contents include: (1) This standard sets out the basic requirements, sampling and testing methods for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks. It may apply to concentrated beverages (solid or liquid) or ready-to-drink beverages and does not apply to potable water, fruit and vegetable juices, herbal juices and grain beverages; (2) Defines the definition, classification, ingredients and basic sensory properties of carbonated and non-carbonated beverages; (3) The maximum limits of physicochemical and microbial indexes of carbonated and non-carbonated beverages are specified, including arsenic and lead 0.05mg/L, mercury 0.001mg/L, cadmium 0.003mg/L, total bacterial colonies 25cfu/ml, mold and yeast 5cfu/ml, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli shall not be detected.
