Interpretation of the latest global squalene market: 2025 will reach 156 million

ECHEMI 2020-08-31

MarketsandMarkets, a market research company, recently released a "Squalene Market" report, stating that the global squalene market was valued at 109.1 million euros in 2019, and will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.3% in the next five years, reaching 155.7 million by 2025. EUR.

Squalene used to be obtained from shark liver oil and is widely used in cosmetics and personal care products, including skin creams and color cosmetics. The raw material is favored for its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory and moisturizing effects.

European cosmetics industry drives market demand and use of squalene

The MarketsandMarkets report pointed out that on a global scale, in terms of monetary value, cosmetics will continue to occupy the largest share of the squalene market in the next 5 years, and the pharmaceutical industry will rank second. In addition, in the next five years, Europe will maintain its position as the largest user of squalene, because Europe gathers major cosmetics manufacturers and the local market has a high demand for high-end beauty products.

In Europe, France has the largest demand for squalene, followed by Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain. The report predicts that the European market will gradually shift from animal source squalene to plant source squalene.

Biosynthetic innovation will boost the squalene market

Parag Shah, deputy research manager of chemicals and materials at MarketsandMarkets, said that the current European developed countries continue to restrict shark fishing, and companies are seeking commercially viable renewable raw materials, biosynthetic dogfish. Ethylene or hydrogenated squalene (called squalane) will gain a more important position.

MarketsandMarkets said that in the next five years, biosynthetic squalene is expected to become the fastest growing cosmetic raw material. Shah said: "Cosmetic manufacturers, including Lancome, L'Oreal, Unilever and Sisley, are very inclined to use bio-based raw materials in their products." The continuous innovation of raw material suppliers will further promote the application of biosynthetic squalene.

At present, American biotechnology company Amyris has developed the technology to produce squalane directly from sugar cane, and other companies and professional institutions are also studying other sources. For example, Texas A&M University (Texas A&M University) cooperated with SynShark, a supplier of cosmetics and pharmaceutical raw materials, to obtain squalane from tobacco crops.

Shah said: "Many companies are working hard to produce squalene from sugarcane with new technology, and some other sugar-containing biological materials have also been determined to produce squalane."

At present, the price of squalene is still fluctuating because of the continuous implementation of new shark fishing bans and the low concentration of plant-derived squalene, resulting in a large amount. However, Shah pointed out that with the continuous progress in the field of biosynthesis and the gradual introduction of commercial squalene products, the supply and price of the raw material are expected to improve.
